New Work - explored in Flickr

 

 

 

 Each day, roughly three to five million photographs are uploaded to Flickr, the photography sharing platform and online community.  So when one of my photographs a Polaroid collage that I had posted during (Pola)Roid Week 2025—was selected for Explore, it felt like a rare moment of being heard.

After 19 years on the platform, this was my first time being featured in Explore. I go by Red Holga Man on Flickr, and for most of those years, I’ve quietly uploaded my work most of my photographs pass through the stream without a single comment or like. And that’s okay. I’ve never made photographs for the algorithm. I’ve made them for me.

As of this writing, this photograph has over 5,500 views, 115 faves, and 21 comments—far beyond my usual numbers. For someone whose average photo might get a few hundred views and little or no interaction this felt like a quiet validation. Not just visibility, but resonance.

This collage will have a place in the book I’m working on, Panoramas & Polaroids. It’s not just a photograph. It’s a turning point. A signal to keep going.

Thanks to everyone who’s followed along, commented, or simply looked, for those who didn’t, thanks for the quiet space to keep making.

 

 

 

New work, New book in the works

It's been a while since I have posted any new photographs, so I thought I would do something about that and post some new photographs and announce a new book that I am currently working on.

In February of 2024, I purchased a new camera, a Malefic Cameras M612 as an addition to my PanHolga, so I have been doing a lot panoramas with both cameras.

Recently, I was afforded the opportunity to attend the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally with an amazing organization Motorcycle Missions, while a lot of the trip involved participating in its events, I had plenty of opportunities to make some photographs, with my PanHolga.

 More recently, earlier this year and in the Fall of 2024, I bought two Polaroid cameras.  I have been experimenting with doing various things including assembling constructed images using multiple Polaroids to make a single image.

 In January of 2020, here and on my Instagram page, I made a post announcing that I was working on a new book of my photography, so I thought I'd announce that I am working on a new book, that I am tentatively calling Panoramas & Polaroids.

 

 With all of the recent work I have, I have started figuring out which photographs will go into the book and how I want to lay things out.  It will continue where my second book left off as a collection of motorcycle photographs, but I'll be using my panorama cameras and my Polaroid camera.  I think that it will be a great book and I hope that you will like it too.

My Autobiography

 

    I did it, I published my autobiography, The Life of Brian; The photographic autobiography of yours truly. You'll notice the semicolon, because it is only meant to be a  fairly comprehensive account of my photographic life over the past 40 years and ends with To be continued..

    It's meant to be legacy of sorts for my photography and covers from when I was in high school, on through my experiences in college, to the mountain bike photography I did, all of the Holga photography I have done so far, including my fly fishing photography and of course my motorcycle photography and towards the end of the book talks about  my future plans for other projects.  

     Unlike my previous books, I only made one version of it, the Large Format Landscape version that measures 13"x11", it  has 212 pages, and contains 171 photographs and images, 97 black and white  photographs, 73 color photographs, one pen and ink drawing I made many years ago and has a word count of more than 6000 words, which doesn't include the photograph info and acknowledgements at the end of the book.  

 

 

    I did this mostly for myself, but if anyone out there purchases a copy, I'd pretty happy with that.

Panheads and Panoramas and the occasional Polaroid...

     In 2024, I bought two new cameras, a Malefic M612 and a Polaroid Now camera (both with red accenting) and since I have finished my last photography book, Harleys and Holgas Forever, I thought I would start another project, using my Malefic camera and PanHolga primarily and the occasional Polaroid thrown in for fun and have the work center around the Harley-Davidson Panhead engine on its motorcycles that were manufactured from 1948 to 1965. Not all of the photographs will be of Panheads, but they will all be panoramas and or Polaroids.

    So far, I have been fortunate to have met another Harley rider through the local Harley dealer, Intermountain or Salt Lake Harley, that happens to one of their mechanics and is a bit of a Panhead expert and owns a beautiful 1965 Electra Glide that I have made a few photographs of with two of my cameras, the Malefic Panorama and the Polaroid.

      

    Through my new friend, I have been afforded an opportunity to be introduced to a few other Panheads.

     The project is still in the beginning stages, but I feel that I am off to a good start.

 

So we'll see where this takes me, I have a lot photographs that are rummaging around in my head just waiting for the right moment to be made.

  

In other news, I am just about done with my autobiography, I have all of the photographs scanned, the pages laid out and all of information about each photograph written up; I also have the text written, I am just waiting to have it looked at from an Army buddy that is an excellent writer and editor.

The Life of Brian

    If you have ever Googled, "The Life of Brian" you'll find stuff largely about the hilarious  Monty Python movie and if you look at the blurb.com bookstore, you'll find more than one book of the same name that are books of some sort or another done by a fellow Brian or about a Brian. So for my next book, which I am calling a photographic autobiography, guess what I aiming to call it.  You guessed it, The Life of Brian.

    As I get older, I often think about what will happen to the 40 years and counting worth of the negatives and slides I have made from my photography, it's not like I am a well known, iconic photographer or even the Messiah, I am just some guy that thinks of himself as a photographer, so who would want to archive my photography. Maybe what I should do, is keep making photographs, and not process my film and maybe years after I am dead, in the same vain as Vivian Maier  someone would find those unprocessed rolls and the rest of my negatives and slides which could create a huge interest in my photography then. It could happen, right?!

   

    The best way I can have some sort of lasting archive of my photography is create a book, according to the Help Center on blurb.com, once a single copy of a book has been purchased the book or books will stay on their servers until the account owner deletes it. 

    So while it's still in development, I have come up with the following possible cover for the book and despite the movie and all of the other Brian's who have lives too, none of them have had the life I have had, so it's this Brian's life,and like "The Chairman of the Board" sang, I am doing it my, because it's my life and my photography. 

So just remember, "When you're chewing on life's gristle, don't grumble; give a whistle, and this'll help things turn out for the best. And... always look on the bright side of life.."

100th Post, Book Update, New Work

 Do you remember what you did 14 years ago, more precisely on  Apr 24, 2010?  I don't, but I can tell you that the was the day I made my first post here, it marked a new format of mtbbrian.com the website I created in 2003.  

This post marks the 100th post I have made on my blogsite as I call it so I thought I'd give a little update on my second photo book and post a new photograph or two that you just might see in the book.

 While I have a lot of photographs to choose from going back to 2016, I'd have to say that this has been one of the most active periods in my photography in a long time, if not ever, because I brought at least 12 rolls of film to Essential Photography Supply for processing this past two months or so; on one occasion I brought six rolls that I had shot over the course of two days at the King Rally, in Sigurd Utah, and came away with enough good photographs from it, that I may have a section of the book dedicated to the rally.

 

I also have some new photographs from the time I recently rode the route for 2024 Ride To Zero route that takes place from September 6-8, 2024.  The route runs through the town of Hanna, Utah and I made this photograph while on a brief stop.

  Like my first book, Trout Dreams,  I am doing it on blurb.com and am planning on doing two hard cover sizes, the Standard Landscape, which is 10"x8"and their Large Format Landscape which is 13"x11". I am really trying to keep the cost down, but the thing to keep in mind when purchasing a book through Blurb, is that the different paper choices are what cost you the most.  For example, the "Standard Landscape" book and selecting their "standard paper" will run you $54 dollars, compared to $90 by selecting their "Mohawk Pro Pearl" paper.  I also had a softcover version of my first book, which lowered the price even, so I'll check that out as an option for my second.  I am hoping to have some available for purchase from me personally or from a local photography shop, so if you are in the greater Salt Lake City, Utah area keep that in mind.

 In other news last month I was involved in  my first motorcycle related photography exhibit when I had one of my photographs as part of a photography contest/exhibit at the Two-Bit Moto Show, put on by a local motorcycle shop Tucker Speed in Ogden.  They had a great variety of motorcycle related photographs and a lot of cool looking bikes and other related stuff.

Let's Ride!

Welcome Home...

March 29, is National Viet Nam Veterans Day, it was first commemorated in 2012, and would eventually become an annual occurrence in 2017 when the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 was signed and became law.

In Layton, Utah there is an 80% scale of the Viet Nam Memorial in Washington DC and this year I went to make some photographs of the wall and of the event happening that day.

 It was a great event, complete with color guard.

All sorts of speakers, from Viet Nam Veterans, to politicians were at the event.

As the events wound down, I went over to the wall to find my uncle's name James F. Schiele, who was killed during the war and happened upon another Veteran who was standing in front of a nearby panel for several minutes. I waited and watched him more after I made a photograph of him and then I approached him,to let him know that I had made a photograph of him and asked if he knew anyone listed on the wall.  He knew a couple of names and was looking for them, but was unable to find them, then I pulled out my phone and pulled one of the many locators, but between the two of us, I wasn't able to find any of his buddies.

At the Layton City wall, there are eight benches placed along and facing the wall that honor the eight women all of which were Army nurses, that were killed in action and whose names are also listed on the wall.  

Largely because of my work life, I have had the opportunity to speak to several thousand Viet Nam Veterans and when our conversations were over I would always thank for what they endured after they got home, because it was not in vain, because it also made things better for my generation of Veterans; I always end the conversation by saying, "Welcome Home".

New photo book (in the works)

 For the dozen or so of you that have been following my photography for the past 11 years or so, you may remember my first photo book, Trout Dreams.   I have decided to do another book, that is very early stages for my motorcycle work that I am calling Harleys and Holgas Forever, which is what I go by on Instagram and also expresses my feelings toward both things. 

 If you follow me on Instagram, you may remember the January 25, 2020 post I made where I first mentioned publishing my second book, a book of my motorcycle photography. At the time, I had what I felt were just a few photographs that I thought would be worthy of a book and I while I don't exactly have enough for a book right now, I definitely  have more.

I have learned a lot about creating and publishing your own book, since Trout Dreams, so I am confident that my next book will be better in terms of layout and design.

When I did Trout Dreams I would regularly post screenshots of the book as I figured out what fonts I wanted to use and page layout, I don't think that I'll do that this time, but I thought I would at least post a couple of screenshots to give you an idea of what the book will look like.

On this format the book is a hardcover with a dust cover, the dark section on the right,which would be the back side of the front,  I plan on having some sort of text an artist statement and probably a picture of me.  On the left, section, I plan on creating some sort of collage of some of my Instagram photos of my own Harley, I may even create larger collage of them too for one of the last pages in the book.  

As with Trout Dreams, I will have a foreword written by someone that knows my work, and while I have a short list of people that I would like to do that, I am not ready for that just yet.

That's all for now, I don't know if I will post as much as I did about the book as did with Trout Dreams as I was working on it, but when it is complete, you will certainly see it here.

It was a nice day for a moto wedding day

I was asked a while ago to do some photography for  a motorcycle riding, Army Veteran, Brother and while most of the photographs I made where with a digital camera, I thought I'd bring along my Holgas and see what I could do with them as well.  I am really quite happy with what I got back afterwards, so I thought I'd post the best photographs here.  

The happy couple were married at an American Legion post, but after the ceremony they along with about two dozen motorcycles (including myself), rode to a little chapel near the Utah State Capitol where the resulting photographs were made.  

 

 

 I even took my PanHolga and got this photograph with all of the bikes parked in front of the chapel.

Unknown angler...

I don't seem to get out and fish as much as I used to, so when I got a roll of Ilford HP5 Plus back recently, I was surprised to see that the first frame of the 12 exposure roll was a scene from a fall or early winter outing on the Lower Provo River.  

My first thought was that the lone angler who seems to be adjusting his line before he casts into cold dark water of the Lower Provo River, was one of my Army buddies, but after checking with him, he said that it wasn't him.  

So whomever you are "lone angler", thanks for letting me take a photograph of you.

New photographs, what do you think?

 I never know what to put out there as far as my photographs go, typically when I get my film back I'll post what I think are the best photographs on my Flickr page, in hopes of getting some constructive feedback or even a comment like " That's a great photograph!", but all I get lately is a "Like"

So with that, I thought would post a few new photographs from a recent couple of rolls of film  that I haven't gotten any sort of feedback, or "likes" on since I posted them.

I thought I'd try something a little different with my PanHolga and pan with the speeding motorcycle as the ride was doing a wheelie..

 

I thought I'd focus on the lines the tires made from the burnouts and the texture of the asphalt, rather than trying to stop the action or get closer to the bikes as they sped by with my regular Holga camera and I think that these two photographs  work well.

So there you have it, if you like these three photographs or don't tell me what you think of them, I'd sure love to hear what you think.

20 Year Anniverrary Giveaway

June, June 21, 2023 to be more precise marks the 20th anniversary of mtbbrian.com, and if you don't believe me or if you want to take a look at what 20 years of my website looks like, check out the "Way Back Machine".

It's been an interesting ride this past 20 years, my site has evolved and de-evolved , from a really basic website that I built using basic web based tools that were hosted by the various internet service providers I have had over the years, to a full on website that I created using professional tools like "Dreamweaver" and were hosted by companies that do that sort of thing, to what it is now, what I call a "blogsite" hosted by blogspot.com (Google) where I have the blogspot URL pointed at mtbbrian.com.  

If you have been following my photography for more than 10 years, you may recall that at that time I was doing a book of my fly fishing photography and to celebrate that and the 10th anniversary of my site, I gave away a copy of the book.

So for the 20th anniversary celebration of my site, I thought I'd do another giveaway and give away not one, but two of my photographs, one fly fishing one and motorcycle one. 

The motorcycle print is one of my favorites of two Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe motorcycles that unbeknownst to me is a bit of a self portrait too.  Can you see me?  I have titled it "Too Deluxe" and is 11"x14". 

  

 

The fishing photograph was in my book and a favorite from that period, I titled it "Rod Holder" and is 8"x10".

 

Both prints were printed by me in the darkroom, on light sensitive, silver gelatin, photographic paper, in other words these are not digital prints.

Bike Night..

 

Bike night, at a local Cycle Gear...

It's been a while...

 It's been a while since I have posted something to my blogsite, 738 days if you are wondering,  but I have been making some Holga photographs, it's just a little easier to do some with my phone and post them to my Instagram account @harleys_and_holgas_forever or on Flickr, where I go by "Red Holga Man" a nickname given to me after attending the Maine Photographic Workshops.. 

I have used both my regular Holga and my 6x12 PanHolga, but have had mixed results over the past while, so I thought I'd post a few of the best photographs I have made recently..

This first one is from a vintage motorcycle show, as I recall, these two guys were wondering how the builder had routed and configured the front brake. 

This is from the same bike show, you can even see this vintage Harley in the background of this first photograph. I used my square Holga and did a "Holgarama" with this one, where I made an exposure of the first half of the bike, then advanced the frame "17 clicks" and panned to the right for the second exposure. 

This next one is also from my 6x12 PanHolga, it's my wife on her bike, riding along the Bonneville Salt Flats.

This last one is from a ride I participated in earlier in the summer, at the Brian Head Ski Resort, that I did with my 6x12 PanHolga as well..

Ride On!

A few new photographs...

If your 2020 has been anything like mine, it has been filled with lots of unexpected adventures, head scratching moments, and other moments that have probably left you with a certain level of disbelief. Despite all of this, I have been doing my best to keep making new photographs that I have had on my Flickr stream, but I thought I'd post here as well.  

This first one is a portrait that I did of a good friend/Brother, that goes by the name of "Tripod".  He's a good guy, that has an interesting motorcycle story, I am grateful for his friendship and for the miles that we have ridden together so far.

If you have followed my photography for a while, and I know that you have, you'll know that I also have a 6x12 Pan Holga camera, that I love to use.  Over the summer, I met some of my Brothers for lunch before going on a nice ride through the mountains of Northern Utah and I was able to make this photograph with my Pan Holga. 

I like taking portraits, at least that's what I call them, so I will end this with another portrait of my favorite person to ride with, my wife...

Film v Digital

If you have followed my photography for a long time, you may remember several years ago, I started photographing these "inflatable characters", that you mostly see at used car dealership, then all of the sudden, I stopped seeing them.   Recently though, through a post that a friend made on Facebook of a picture of an inflatable duck that was at a car wash, I was fortunate enough find it there and went to photograph it.

I am not exactly trying to compare film and digital, because at this point, having the need to scan the film for this photograph, it's all digital anyway, but since I was able to make a photograph of the scene with both my Holga camera, using Fujichrome Provia 400 and the camera on my phone, using Pixlr to process the file, I thought I'd put them here together.

If you have been following my photography, you'll know that I prefer to have a boarder of some kind  and in the case of my Holga photographs, the boarder looks something like this.

The camera phone image on the other hand, looks like this:

As I mentioned above, I use the Pixlr app, for my post processing and the camera on my phone shoots the RAW format, which is what I use for my more creative photographs.  My process is quick and easy, I crop the file to square, select the "sloppy" boarder, and use the app's "Sophia" effect, that's all.

Goals, My next book

Winter is the worst time for motorcycle riders, because you can't ride; so the other morning I woke needing to hop on my motorcycle, but I was unable to do so, because snow had fallen the night before.  

Needless to say, I had a little pent up energy, that I was able to overcome, slightly anyway, through a creative type of outlet. So with a cup of coffee in my hand, I went to my computer, pulled up the BookWright software from Blurb.com and created what I am calling a very preliminary and potential cover for a photo book about my motorcycle photography, that I am thinking of calling, Harleys and Holgas Forever, after my Instagram handle.  

If you are fan of my photography, and I know that there at least 10 of you out there, you may remember my first photo book, Trout Dreams; I know that there are at least 10 of you out there, because 14 copies of it were bought, and I bought four copies myself.

I learned a lot doing the first book and hope to make this better.  It took me about six years to have enough photographs that I felt were worthy to be in the book and by the looks of my Flickr photstream, I posted my first motorcycle photographs in 2016, so it could be at least two years before I get to that point. 

So here's to more photographs and to more riding of course.

Rider and Bike

I like meeting people, I like seeing cool motorcycles, so naturally when I saw this cool "76" Harley Shovelhead ride in at an event a while ago, I knew that I had talk to it's owner and make a few photographs of it.

I usually like to get an over all portrait of a bike, but I think in this case the other two photographs that I made

I always like making a portrait of the rider and his or her bike, and I really think that this one turned out well. I'll say something like, "Give me your best, Yeah, I ride a Harley pose", which always tends to lighten the mood and enables me to get a good portrait.

I like to get a detail photograph of a bike a lot too, and this left side of this Shovelhead, with it's "suicide shift" and skull picture on the tank did not disappoint.

It's coming up on the end of 2019, so this will probably be my last group of photographs that I will post for a while. I am not sure what 2020 will bring, but I will always bring my Holgas with me, and even if I don't make any photographs with my Holgas, I am sure that I will at least make some pictures that you will probably see on my Instagram account, Harleys_and_Holgas_Forever. So check me out there if you already don't.

Veteran suicide

November 10, 2018 the day before Veteran's Day, an organization in Tooele, Utah, the Life's Worth Living Foundation, unveiled what is being heralded as a first of its kind monument to dedicated to the issue of Veteran suicide.
Being a Veteran, I am horribly concerned about this issue, so naturally I went and took a few friends, both Veteran and non-Veteran alike
 

The numbers vary over the past few years, but it is estimated that 20-22 of my fellow Veterans take their own lives each, which averages to be about one suicide every 65 minutes.  I personally believe that this epidemic is preventable, by doing a very simple thing, something that we are trained to do and is a part of the culture of the military, and that is look out for one another. I realize that this isn't a be all solution, and I am not even sure that there is such a thing for this epidemic, but I know that it is something that can prevent someone from taking their life.

Even if you are not a Veteran, you can help with this epidemic, you can reach out to a Veteran that you may know,  especially if you know that he or she is in crisis.

As I have often said, I am grateful for our nation and the Veteran community, in particular Viet Nam Veterans, because there are many organizations that have been created by Viet Nam Veterans to help Veterans, in particular  my generation to deal with all of the crazy stuff that Veterans deal with.  I could easily name countless organizations like that help teach Veterans an activity or skill, but I will list the following:
Project Healing Waters
Guitars for Vets
Veterans Charity Ride

There are also other organizations like The National Center for Veterans Studies, that are studying this epidemic and making a huge difference.
